Shoot Ill go first.
I hear people say there is a 4l60e tranmission and a 4l60. Well I was reading my haynes manual and i came accross a section that refered to transmissions from different years. anyways it looked like this 700r4 (4l60). So my question is: Is the 700r4 transmission the same as a 4l60. And the 4l60e is an electronic controlled tranny thats in newer vehicles

the 700 was built from 1982 to 1987 ish
the trans then went through some decent updates and was relabled the 4l60
all gm transmissions were renumbered/named during this time
the 4l6o was built until 1993 but the only way you could get a 4l60 in 93 was to buy a stripped elbasico " work special "
the 4l60e was sold during the 1993 model year in everything else
the 60e has the same gearing as a 700/4l6o until 2005 when the 4l65e was produced with 5 pinion gearing and a updated input needle bearing these parts will retrofit backwards to all models although personally i feel the 4 pinion rear planet with the oil weir is more durable
there is a lot more differences during the 93 to current versions in cases, pumps, valve bodies, electrics than you can imagine
if you need an exact answer i will be more exact

We used to have a '91 Suburban (still the K5 body style). I am 100% sure it had a 4L60E, so the electronic version has to be older than '93. I think it started in '91.

Default Re: hi guys

the last years of the 4l60 had pure computer control for the convertor clutch during cruise/tip in/3/4 downshift
all versions had at least 1 power wire for lockup even in 1982
i am wrong though on the 60/65 changeover year it was 2002 in some trucks and 05 by all of them sorry
the 60e pure computer version was not at all used before 1993 could you have had a
4l8oe which did come out in the 91 model year in the 3/4 tons and up

It was a 1/2 ton suburban. When the trans went out @ ~130K it was a big hassle to replace. Everyone claimed that it wasn't computer controlled.

When we bought it the salesman claimed it was the first of the electronic transmissions. The mechanic dropped the tranny to determine what it was and it turned out to be the electronic controlled version.

This all happened when I was ~12 but my dad and I have talked about it since. I'm still pretty sure it was the first year a 4L60E came in Chevys, even if they were rare.

okay you seem very sure of this so i will believe you
there are quite a few instances when stuff is built 1 year older or 1 year newer than it is supposed to be
checking with other guys here they swear that you could get a 4l60e in 1992, is there any way at all that the build date could have been 10/91 or later ?

Not sure. It was a '91 k-series suburban (still solid axle 10 bolt under the front with the old body style). It took a fair amount of convincing to make the mechanic believe that it had the electronic version too. Maybe it was a freak deal? Anyway, we sold that one and bought a '99 about 8 years ago so I have no idea on the build date.
