MrK5's powerstroke comment triggered an idea in my head. I think we need a healthy debate over diesel's. Im kinda in between the duramax and the cummins. My dad has an 06 duramax king cab. He put a Bully dog chip in it, cold air intake, and some aftermarket performance exhaust system. If its added up right, he's pushing somewhere around 450-530(pending the chip stage) horses. Now hes wondering why his allison transmission is starting to slip after a few years of smoking jacked up powerstrokes...

My grandpa used to work on the road, and only drove/drives duallys. He used to live by the powerstroke until he bought his 05 cummins a few years ago. 6speed, quad cab, dually, shortbed, straight pipes. I gotta admit, I kinda feel like the operator of a battle tank when Im driving it around.

Oh, heres my dads duramax by the way. I almost forgot I had a picture of it.Click the image to open in full size.

I don't know that the 6.0L in my SD is the best or most powerful. Ford had several years of issues with the 6.0L, the '06 & '07 model years are supposed to be the best. In '08 they introduced the twin-turbo 6.4L. I haven't heard a lot about those yet. I'm just happy to be able to haul the 1000lbs camper and 8000lbs trailer down the Interstate at 75-80mph or 55mph up over Eisenhower tunnel at 11,000ft. If I wanted to dragrace, I'd get an old muscle car or hot rod. A lot cheaper to go a lot faster.

To be honest the reason we chose the SD was because of the overall truck. Before buying, we sat in a crewcab Chevy and a crewcab Dodge and we liked the SD hands down. It also helped that the price was great on our SD.

So IMO, taking the truck as a whole I think the Super Duty is the top.

Mrk5 has a good point. With regards to diesels, I have always looked at the engine, durability, life expectancy and of course how much power it can make.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't want to spend the time, money and repairs to get 1000lb/ft of torque any more. Sure I will probably put a couple of things on it to help it's breathing for a bit more power and economy. With that in mind, all the big 3 diesels can and will do that.
Now it comes down to the rest of the truck. ie. durability, life expectancy, quality control, mileage etc.

How about this? Whoever here has a newer (within 5 years?) diesel, post up the honest pros and cons and why you like or don't like it.

2006 Ford F350 Super Duty, crewcab, 6.0L Powerstroke, 5spd auto trans, 4wd

Pros:
  • Very roomy and comfortable - rear seating has as much room as the front
  • Excellent towing stability
  • Trans has tow/haul mode that changes shift points and firmness and provides compression breaking that works great for coming down steep mountain grades with or without a load
  • Integrated brake controller
  • Pre-wired with 5 accessory switches including relays
  • Factory 5yr/100,000mi warranty on all engine components
  • Easiest oil change of all the vehicles I've owned

Cons:
  • 18" wheels make for expensive tires
  • Common issues with the 6.0L
  • LONGGG truck

my parents had a duromax, ive driven superduties for work, and ive owned cummins. in my opinion the cummins is the way to go, but thats only my opinion. none of these rigs had anything more done to them than straight piped.

I bought a Dodge.

The G56 6 speed manual, Cummins 600 motor and chassis as well as solid reliability from 4 friend/family owener near identical trucks through 120k miles sold me.

I don't think there is a solid winner for everyone produced by any one of the big 3. Not everyone values things the same way.

the best IMHO is a cummins in an older chev the cummins is the cheapest to hot rod out and can make great power the fords are great trucks and are made to tow but when your tryin to make massive HP they are costly then you have the D-Max man this motor is nuts and it has a great tranny behind it but they both have issues the tranny is not setup to handle anything over stock so you add some power with out upgradeing the tranny and you need to buy a new one but its so easy to get power with this motor and the tranny cant go wrong with an allison then you have the dodge cummins witch are known to last 500k with minmal problems they have 1 problem that can cause issues and thats a dowel pin inside the timeing cover add a little chunk of metal that will hold it in and away ya go its as easy to turn up as can be just need to spin some screws on the pump and ya can get up to 300 HP with stock injectors and turbo. if any one has any ??? about DSLs feel free to PM me since that is my passion i know alot about them and if i dont know it i can find the answer
