No new pics today. I added a tech article on how to make an "orb of traction" I finished cutting all the brackets/perches off of my 14ff and I used the blending disk to clean up the mess.
Last night I ordered some brackets from DIY I ordered the caliper brackets and spring perches and some spring hangers I think I can use.
I am thinking of a way to grind my ring gear... I don't want to heat it up too much and ruin the heat treatment. I think I will set it up in the housing and grind it on a bevel allowing it to rotate as I grind it. I think it will spread out the heat more evenly and speed up the job. I also need to grind it evenly I think it will help with that too. Maybe tomorrow...

I started grinding the crown gear today. I have pics, but forgot my camera at the shop. I started with a 5" grinder and it went slowly. I borrowed a 7" grinder and it went much faster. I estimate about 2 hours more grinding to go. But who knows? the more I grind the wider it gets.

I got my DIY brackets today! And they look great! The bad news is my camera is on the bottom of the ocean. My son dropped it off the boat when we were fishing, so I need to get another... I didn't have new studs so I mocked it together with 2 old ones and figured out how it goes together. I ordered a new set of studs they will be here friday. I really like how it looks. I set up the gears, its so damn easy on a 14ff.
The DIY spring perches have 3 holes in them for the center bolt. I will use the most offset hole to move my axle rearward and let me move my spring forwards, further reducing my rear overhang. so far the plan is retain the blazer 108" wheelbase but have both axles moved forward 5-7".

Summer finally got here and its too hot (for me) to work in the afternoon.

I think its time I did an update.

The grinding is done

ooooo.... shiny!

Final measurement from 10.5" to 9 7/8"
I thought it was more!

orb of traction installed

Used rotor and caliper DIY4X brackets. I cleaned & primed everything a shot of rustoleum silver for contrast/pimpin goodness

new studs

new studs installed

diff under the frame

I think I will run the rear spring here inboarded.
I did a few ballpark measurements I set the pinion where it probably needs to go. It looks like 28 degrees is the number. I still need to mock up the front end before I make the rear brackets. My thinking is I will set up the front end and see where everything sits. I can adjust the height of spring perches etc before I commit to anything. I do not want to have to add lift blocks etc to level out the truck later. I like the raked look, front a few inches lower than the rear. So my thinking is get it dead level with a bare frame and the drivetrain/cab will give it the rake.
After I get all these springs under it I'll have to learn a few things about shackle angle etc before I go much further...

A small progress update.
first some pics:

I made some 7" shackles out of 3/8 X 2" flat bar. I can move the front axle 4" to 9" forward with this setup. My current thinking is go with the shackles straight up and when the weight is on the frame they will move back where they need to go. With the shackles straight up the front axle is approx 6" forward.... I estimate about 3" of frame ahead of the tires.... COOL! I've always wanted an insane approach angle! I will drag the rear as far forward as practical to keep near a 108" wheelbase. I am cutting off any unneeded rear frame overhang.

I'm working 12 shifts now, 4 on 4 off so I don't do much on the days I work (unless I sneak a little job into work). I should have 3 days to play with this. (I have to install a window at home.)

The latest updates... I decided to go with the speedway brakeline setup
Nylon Brake Line Kit

so I took the remaining brakelines off my frame. It says not for street use on there. I read a long thread on pirate about them and they are good to go. Steel brakeline has no DOT approved stamps on it either.

(edit: pirate thread here: http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=643261)

I pulled the 4WD steering box and draglink off.

I had to work on my old truck as I managed to pull the bolts out of my NWF doubler.

Well I did a little yesterday before work.
I had a chunk of 5X1/4" Angle and a chunk of 4X1/4" angle and....
(EDIT: Oops. it is actually 5X3/8" and 4X3/8")
with moving my spring attachment point forward, and needing a place to mount my tilt hood hinges, and mounting the winch I need a bumper that has to do a few things right. I'm trying to tone down my overbuilding instincts, but it isn't easy... first my old bumper:

Yes it is all 1/4 wall and 3/8" plate. Very heavy.
Here is what I came up with:

I was going to zipcut this all out and bend it up. after a while I realized that was not going to happen so I just cut up the pieces and stick welded it all together.

As you can tell I like welding in the flat position. I will go out of my way to roll, tilt, move or whatever it takes to do that.

After I was satisfied with that part I figured I should measure it out and make damn sure the winch would fit.

I need to cut the top open also, I'll do it later as it helps keep everything straight during the welding.

Last night I was able to make a couple of adjustable spring hangers out of some 4"HSS with 1/4 wall, not as nice as Kerts stuff but I ordered the wrong size for the front.
And now for today:
I drilled 1 hole on the top of each side of the bumper to hold it on for now so I can mock the other parts up.
.
here is how I left it today sitting on its own.

No drivetrain in it yet

and how I'm getting it there:

I went thru a bit of trial and error setting it up. I'm not sure if this is how I'm going to do it but it should be close to this.

I did a little measuring and pondering and comparing.
My bogger with the 44s is at 25" at the belly right now. if I had those tires on this frame it would be 30 1/2"! That's a lot of lift! The back will rise a bit from this point as I haven't made spring perches there yet. It should settle some, at least I hope it does!
