Figured Id better start another thread to keep track of my findings/changes.

Started the fire in the shop this morning and went to work. My heat is blowing COLD ASS AIR, so I was also trying to diagnose that problem. The plan was

New thermostat
Thermostat sensor change (my temp gauge inside is doing some weird stuff)
Oil change+filter change
Axle fluid+cover gasket change.

Simple huh? NOPE!

Had to pull belt+alternator off to get thermostat housing out. lost probably a gallon of antifreeze in the process. Turns out, when you buy a new thermostat, THEY DONT INCLUDE A GASKET. So now I get to make another run to the parts store for a gasket.

Oil change was easy. The filter was actually at the front of the pan on pass. side. Kinda stumped me at first.

Then onto the axles. This is where it got tricky. I have a Dana 60 front, and Dana 70 rear, so I had already bought gaskets for this process. The gaskets for the D60 and D70 are basically IDENTICAL. No problem, I already had my stuff matched up. I pulled the cover off the D60 and took the cover off for cleanup with the wire wheel. The cover was coated with mud/dirt/grime but it was no match for my flathead and wire wheel. Painted it, and went on to the rear.

Pulled the rear cover off with no problems. :yay:Then I noticed THIS:Seepictures: I was basically like WTF? Then It hit me. The person who pulled the covers before me got them mixed up. WRONG again. Basically, my ring gear teeth are grinding off and even hitting the back of the correct cover.(Ive been checking and re-checking for the past two hours).

Any suggestions because Im all out of answers.
If worst comes to worst, Ill replace the entire axle to get to AR and rebuild this one when I get there.

All stock. My best guess is the front bearing broke and caused the ring gear to slide back when torqued. Any other educated guesses?

If your idea is true that would have to be from your carrier bearings. What I'd call a "front" bearing would be the pinion bearings, and they wouldn't cause your ring gear to hit the cover. You could verify the carrier bearing cap bolts are tight. Also grab the carrier itself and see if it moves around. You could also spin the driveshaft by hand to see if you detect anything awry. Could it possibly be a scar from some past problem a previous owner already repaired?

Nope. Ill have to get back in the shop ASAP and post pictures. Scott, you'll know what I mean when you see my ring gear. Good call on the carrier bearings. Shoulda been a little more clear. Theres alot of those little bastards in there. Im really not looking foreward to tearing into it.

I think Im experiencing mechanic cold feet. Tearing into the unknown kinda scares the hell out of me when its important.

Axle gears are one thing I don't do, at least not to the extent it requires setting up the gears. I had 38377k5 do my last set.

Ok, Ive gotten this far after messing with the fire: put the front diff back on, and filled it. Takes awile since its cold and oil doesnt exactly move fast to begin with. For future reference to anyone else, I run 80/90 in all my axles.

I had filled the rear diff again, to try and flush out some more metal, so I drained it again. Pics of my ring gear and exiter ring. My exiter ring really took the beating since it sticks out more than my ring gear.

Then I unbolted the rear driveshaft from the yoke on the axle. I pulled the caps on my U-joint and the needle pins looked intact to me.

I cant move my yoke foreward or back when jerking with both hands, but I can turn it about 1/16 of a turn by hand. Pretty sure something fishy is going on there.

Any input?

Sorry the pictures were a little fuzzy, My good camera is dead and I think my siblings decided to hide my charger. So I used my moms Kodak.

I think I MAY have diagnosed the start of the carnage. 1 Ring gear bolt completely missing, and another came out with one 1/4 turn. Now Im gonna pull the axle shafts out, and try to get the entire unit out to see the bad news.

I have successfully removed my first differential! It really wasnt hard at all. I was thinking that there was some kind of "hidden secret" to it. WRONG again.

Removed 8 bolts on each axle shaft, removed 4 bolts on the bearing caps, and walah. I didnt have a socket big enough and I cant get a wrench on the the yoke bolt.(BIG ASS bolt thats right in the middle of the yoke where the U-joint bolts up). So I was in the dark about whether or not it would work. Turns out, it did. Now Ive just gotta inspect the assembly.

Any input at all?
