Welcome to Tech Tuesday. The way this works is simple. I bring up a topic related to off roading in some way, ask questions, get feedback, basically interview you guys. If you have something useful to say, add it, if not, just read.

Rock Lights

What are Rock Lights?
Why should I install them?
What is so great about them?
How hard are they to install and wire up?
What parts do I need?
What different types are available?
What is the average cost?

I have 2 different types on the General.

The first set I installed were red LEDs. They work okay, but don't illuminate the trail all that well. They've really become more of a novelty than anything else.

The other lights I have are Hela work lights I got from Summit for $12 each. I put one in each fender pointing straight down. They are bolted to the frame. These lights illuminate the trail really well. The only thing to watch is the total amp draw. All 4 will pull 18amps.

Here are some pics:

Those look both useful and cool but I think one romp thru the gorge and they would be covered in mud and useless. Not a mod for me I guess. I saw another guy had backup cameras under his rig, way cool!

I think the argument for red LED's is that they won't hurt your night vision so much, which is true, but then you need to be running without your headlights and in total darkness for that to work.

As for the cameras, there's a bunch of different ways to do it. I'm thinking about buying a couple of bullet cams and wiring them to a ~6" LCD panel in the cab...there still needs to be some source of light for them to see though.

Pyle makes a "waterproof" bullet cam, and the actual price is WAY cheaper than the MSRP listed on their site:

I have a bad habit of buying any cheap/clearanced driving lights with H3 bulbs. However every rig I installed "rock lights" they turned out to be more work lights that anything else. Nothing wrong with that either though, no need to hold a flashlight when pulling that pretzel of a driveshaft.

In re-reading this I just realized the General looks like a prop out of the Fast & Furious.

Pimptastic.

If we can just get him dressed up as a Beastie Boy clone that'd make for some good video.

I used drive around with the LED's on for that reason. Then one time a cop flashed me so I figured it was a no-no.

I know that a few colors of underglow are illegal, but which ones are legal? Id never thought about it, but I think they would be pretty handy on my next rig...

The General looks pretty cool with the red lights, I never knew he had them until this thread was brought to my attention.
